China's Baidu AI Surpassed ChatGPT On Multiple Key Metrics

China's Baidu AI Surpassed ChatGPT On Multiple Key Metrics

The Chinese Tech Giant’s Latest AI Offering Makes Strides in Comprehensive Abilities and Performance in Chinese Language Tasks
Baidu, the powerhouse behind China's premier search engine, announced on Tuesday that its newest artificial intelligence model, Ernie 3.5, has outperformed ChatGPT, OpenAI's widely acclaimed chatbot, in comprehensive ability scores. Additionally, Ernie 3.5 boasts superior performance to GPT-4 in multiple Chinese language tasks.

This breakthrough announcement by Baidu is a strong indicator of the intensifying global race in AI innovation. ChatGPT, backed by Microsoft and developed by OpenAI, has been making waves worldwide. Its impact has been particularly notable in China, where domestic companies have been spurred into developing competing AI products.

Baidu’s Advancement in AI

Ernie 3.5, Baidu’s latest upgrade to its Ernie series of AI models, has exhibited impressive advancements. Baidu’s statement highlighted its edge over OpenAI's offerings, citing an independent test conducted by China Science Daily. The test utilized AGIEval and C-Eval datasets, which are industry benchmarks for evaluating the performance of AI models.

With Ernie 3.5, Baidu has reinforced its position as a pioneer in the AI sector among Chinese technology companies. Earlier in March, Baidu made headlines by being the first major Chinese tech company to throw its hat into the AI ring against ChatGPT with the release of Ernie Bot. Built on Baidu’s Ernie 3.0 AI model, Ernie Bot underwent invite-only tests over the past three months.

Efficiency and Plugin Support

In its announcement, Baidu emphasized the improved training and inference efficiency of Ernie 3.5, suggesting that these enhancements will enable swifter and more cost-effective future developments. An intriguing aspect of the new model is its support for external plugins, which could revolutionize the AI's applications. These plugins can allow Baidu's AI to excel in more specialized tasks such as summarizing extensive text and generating highly accurate responses.

Notably, OpenAI introduced plugin support for ChatGPT in March.

AI Fever Sweeps China

Following Baidu's initiative, other titans in the Chinese technology sector, including Alibaba Group and Tencent Holdings, have unveiled their own AI models, reflecting the escalating competitiveness in the field.

As of press time, OpenAI has not responded to requests for comments regarding Baidu’s announcement.

With this recent development, it's evident that Baidu is positioning itself as a formidable player in the global AI arena, and the race for AI supremacy continues to heat up.
