Eta leaves eight dead in Central America, four of them in Guatemala
At least four people, including two children aged 2 and 11, died in landslides in Guatemala due to the passage of the tropical depression Eta, civil protection reported Thursday, which also reported two other missing people in the country.
The deceased in Guatemala join other victims of Eta, which on Tuesday hit northern Nicaragua as a category 4 hurricane and which had already claimed the lives of two girls due to landslides in Honduras and two miners due to landslides in the Nicaraguan North Caribbean.
The Guatemalan minors died in the Los Trigales village, in Quiché (north), after a landslide buried their precarious home, David de León, spokesman for the Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Conred) of Guatemala, told reporters.
Another victim died in the town of Chinautla, adjacent to the Guatemalan capital to the north; while the fourth died in the Pajales village, also in Cunén, where there are two disappeared, said De León.
Eta continues to dump rains throughout Central America, where it has caused landslides due to soil saturation.
According to Conred, the tropical depression has caused 89 incidents in Guatemala, putting 487 people at risk, there are 33,282 people affected by floods or roadblocks, 1,801 evacuees, 408 sheltered, 92 homes at risk and 443 homes damaged.
In addition, strong winds have knocked down 18 trees in different parts of the country, especially in the north and east.
Meanwhile, in the Caribbean department of Izabal, the rains caused flooding of streets, highways and houses due to the overflowing of rivers, according to AFP sources.
