Study Finds Alarming Levels of Abuse Against Female Gamers
Half of British female gamers have experienced abuse, including sexual messages, while playing online, according to a report.
The survey found that 75% of women aged 18-24 have been victimized, and 80% of those affected said the messages they received were sexual in nature.
The report also found that 52% of women felt worried about harassment, and 10% said they felt so depressed that they contemplated suicide.
Despite this, many women do not report the abuse, with 25% saying they would not tell anyone.
The survey was commissioned by Sky Broadband, and it found that 35% of female respondents had received violent messages and that 40% of women felt threatened by the abuse they received online.
The gaming world needs to be made "safer for women," according to the campaign, which is fronted by Stephanie Ijoma and Danielle Udogaranya.
