Police have been called to East India Dock Road, in Tower Hamlets, after reports of a young child falling from a block of flats. The child has been taken to hospital while police continue to close the roads.
Tower Hamlets Police confirmed they were called to East India Dock Road to reports of a child falling from a tall residential building.
They tweeted:"Officers attended with LAS. The child, believed to be a toddler, has been taken to hospital - we await a condition update.
"Officers remain on scene & road closures are in place at junction with Chrisp Street and Newby Place. Motorists should use other routes."
Two ambulances, a hazardous area response team and an air ambulance were dispatched to the scene in Poplar.
Shocking footage posted on social media shows the child in the road while police are treating the young child.
Crowds gathered around the child and a woman is heard screaming out for her child.
Shocked bystanders are seen standing nearby watching the incident unfold.
According to eyewitnesses, the toddler reportedly fell from the eighth floor.
Apsana Begum, MP for Poplar and Limehouse, urged people to with footage from dash cams to get in touch with police as investigations are ongoing.
She wrote on Twitter: "Earlier this evening, a child was taken to hospital by emergency services following a fall from a block of flats in Poplar.
"My thoughts are with the child & those affected.
"If you’re a witness or have dash cam footage, please call 101, quote CAD 6419/27 July to assist enquiries."
Earlier this month, a murder investigation was launched after a man, believed to have been in his late teens or early 20s, was found with stab wounds in Poplar.
Despite emergency services carrying out first aid the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
A second man, believed to be in his late teens, was rushed to hospital by London Ambulance Service.
No arrests have been made, the Metropolitan Police said.
