Speaking with the Cayman Compass Tuesday night, Commissioner Byrne said he is hoping to have the land filled by the end of the year so the site will be ready for construction.

The aim is to have the new building replace the current facilities at the West Church Street station.

“Once the outline business case is completed for the new police station, a Cabinet note for approval of the funding will be sent,” Byrne said.

He said he could not yet share a figure on the police station’s costs, as those details will be available when the business case is finalised and approved.

A previous police statement on the station’s construction stated that a range of building options are still being considered.

It also said the current time frame for the project is approximately two to three years.

Commissioner Byrne has gone on record saying his officers cannot remain in the existing station indefinitely.

“The current police station on West Church Street is in a very poor state and beyond economic repair, with a number of structural deficits and health and safety concerns that are well documented,” Byrne said previously.
