Top 5 things to do in Cayman when it's raining

Top 5 things to do in Cayman when it's raining

Both residents and visitors on Grand Cayman praise the tropical climate for its sunny days and warm nights. Occasionally though, nature takes its course and the sun is overshadowed by rain - leaving outdoor enthusiasts and beachgoers in need of an indoor retreat.

Thankfully, Grand Cayman has plenty of options which will keep you dry and entertained when the weather is less than beach-worthy.

Here are five recommendations:

Art and Culture: The next time rainy weather cancels your beach plans, consider going to The National Gallery of the Cayman Islands, located off the Easterly Tibbetts Highway. You will be impressed with the building’s modern architecture, manicured grounds with a sculpture garden, and art collections. Guests will find temporary exhibits, which change several times a year, on the ground floor. The permanent collection, with historically significant pieces, is housed on the second floor. The National Gallery is open Monday thru Saturday 10am to 5pm and admission is free. https://www.nationalgallery.org.ky/

Plunge underwater while staying dry: If you cannot imagine spending a day away from the water, consider booking an excursion on Atlantis Submarines. Offering both day and night “dives” in their 48-seater submarine, guests can explore underwater landscapes while staying dry and warm. Atlantis offers multiple tours a day catering to last-minute plan changes. To reserve your spot book online or call ahead. Prices vary depending on excursion. https://www.caymanislandssubmarines.com/contact-us/

Pamper yourself: Perhaps the rainy weather was just what the doctor ordered when you use the excuse to book some spa time. Grand Cayman is home to several soul-healing spas with varying price points. The most luxurious (and pricey) spas on Grand Cayman include La Prairie Spa at the Ritz-Carlton Grand Cayman and the Kimpton’s Spa at Seafire. More affordable options include Body Works, Touch of Thai, and The Retreat at Tips and Toes, which will also leave you feeling rejuvenated.

Tour and Taste: Lose track of time and maybe even the weather by going on a distillery tour and tasting. For just $15USD a person, guests can go behind the scenes of Cayman Spirits Company to learn about local vodka and rum. Then after the tour, guests are treated to a tasting. Tours are offered Monday through Saturday at 11am, 1pm and 3pm. Reservations are made online or by calling. https://caymanspirits.com/.

Visit the Playhouse: Pass a rainy evening at the Prospect Playhouse. Home to the Cayman Drama Society the Playhouse stages several shows a year cast and directed by local talent. Shows are typically on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, with a Matinee on Sunday. Theatre-goers will also be happy to know that the Playhouse is complimented with a bar. https://www.cds.ky/.
