Tourism Association member poll reveals polarization over port project
The Cayman Islands Tourism Association (CITA) has confirmed that its membership is divided in its position surrounding the cruise berthing project.
In a press release dated December 2, CITA stated: “No organization is intricately more divided on the subject than CITA.”
The release revealed that, according to a recent member poll, the Associations’ members are “clearly divided over the matter.”
Given the division, the Board decided that it would continue to remain neutral on the Cruise Berthing project and “would encourage the exchange of information between Government and its members as much as possible.”
CITA represents over 250 tourism businesses which include hotels, condominiums and villas, watersports operators, restaurants, attractions, airlines, tourism transport providers, cruise sector businesses and allied tourism service providers.
Given that the government’s ad campaign for the Cruise Birthing project is themed “Support Our Tourism”, the division within the local tourism sector could be problematic.
In keeping with its commitment to inform its members, CITA held a members only meeting with the Verdant Isle Port Partners and Senior Government officials on December 4.
“While it may be difficult to distinguish fact from opinion, exposing oneself to the opposing viewpoints presents an important opportunity, particularly for those un-decided on the matter, to delve into multiple facets of the monumental decision before us” said CITA President,Theresa Leacock-Broderick.
“We encourage everyone to attend or view these various meetings online, to allow yourself time to think the issues through for yourself, and ultimately, to vote on Referendum Day."
