Tragedy at Sea: British Billionaire and Family Among Five Dead in Submersible Accident
The OceanGate Titan submersible descended in total darkness to the bottom of the sea, 12,500 feet deep, where the group of five passengers, including British billionaire explorer Hamish Harding, French diver Paul-Henri Nargeolet, Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood, his 19-year-old son Suleman, and OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, died in an implosion.
The passengers were likely listening to music before the accident, and debris from the vessel was found on the ocean floor near the Titanic wreck.
The group was warned that they would be descending in darkness to save battery power, but they were also told to expect to see bioluminescent creatures at such ocean depths.
Christine, the wife of Shahzada Dawood and mother of Suleman, revealed that her husband and son were both fascinated by the Titanic wreck and that they prepared for the trip by downloading their favorite music and taking a Bluetooth speaker.
Christine was initially supposed to be on the submersible with her husband, but her son took her place when the pandemic delayed their trip.
Before the journey, Stockton and his wife traveled to London to talk to the Dawoods about everything, including the engineering of the submersible.
Christine described her husband's excitement as he was "lapping everything up" and "vibrating" like a toddler.
A submersible tourist vessel, the Titan, carrying five people, including British billionaire Hamish Harding, went missing while on a voyage to the wreckage site of the Titanic.
The U.S. Coast Guard announced on June 22, 2023, that the Titan imploded near the wreckage of the Titanic, killing all aboard.
The group had been briefed before the dive and were advised to wear thick socks and a hat, and to eat a low-residue diet the day before the dive.
The submersible had no toilet, and no coffee was allowed.
The group set off at 8am and were dressed in OceanGate flight suits, waterproof trousers, an orange waterproof jacket, steel-toed boots, life vests, and helmets.
The search for the missing submersible is ongoing.
A submarine called Titan, carrying five passengers, imploded and sank to the ocean floor, killing all on board.
Debris from the sub was found after the crew of another ship noticed it was missing.
The sub likely imploded quickly, likely within a matter of "microseconds" after a crack or leak in the vessel.
The US Navy confirmed the time of the implosion was 9:45 am.
