Weather service predicts more severe 2nd half for hurricane season 2020
The Cayman Islands National Weather Service (CINWS) on Thursday, June 9, issued a revised 2020 Hurricane Season prediction, saying the update was necessary as one of the sources the service uses – Colorado State University – had adjusted their prediction to reflect an increase in named storms.
The prediction of the Colorado State University slightly above-normal season with as many as 20 named storms and up to 8 major hurricanes.
Hurricane season began on June 1, predictions are that the 2nd half of the season is when the more serious storms are likely to form.
“Three problems with these late-season storms forming the western Caribbean include possible short warning times, erratic paths, and the potential for rapid intensification,“ commented CINWS release.
Late-season storms, according to CINWS, can catch residents off guard, and warned that residents should always be prepared for a major storm, especially in the second half of the season.
“Two agencies that work closely together as part of the National Early Warning System are the Cayman Islands National Weather Service and Hazards Management Cayman Islands (HMCI). The main roles of the Cayman Islands National Weather Service during the hurricane season is in monitoring the formation and monitoring the progress of systems; warning the public when these systems become a threat; and provide guidance on the impacts of major storms,” explained the CINWS statement.
The CINWS release further explained the HMCI which is it said had overall responsibility for the National Emergency Operations Centre.
