A false killer whale calf was found stranded in Bodden Town yesterday morning.
The highly social species (Pseudorca crassidens) is considered to be endangered, inhabiting tropical and subtropical waters around the world.
Given that this was a single stranding, it is left to be seen how long the cetacean had been dead and what the reason was for its death. Scientists have indicated that changes in water temperature, peculiarities of whales' echolocation in certain surroundings, and geomagnetic disturbances are common causes for stranding. Other possibilities include genetic mutations, illnesses from infections or parasites, injuries from predators or entanglements in fishing gear and old age.
The Cayman Islands Department of the Environment transported the remains to St. Matthews University vets for necropsy.
